Best Airline Wine Lists 2013

Check out the best airline wine lists on offer in Business and First.

Drinking fine Champagne, white Burgundy or mature claret at 30,000 feet is a luxury reserved for those sitting at the front of the plane. But which airline should you choose if you want the best glass of wine?

This year's results from Global Traveler magazine show that the best wine list for business class passengers is Brussels Airlines, while the best first class airline wines are served on British Airways. It’s the second consecutive year that the two airlines have taken the top honors in the magazine's Wines on the Wings competition,

A welcoming glass of Champagne is a key part of an airline’s business-class package and Brussels Airlines took top place with its Laurent-Perrier Brut NV.
The best first-class Champagne was Hainan Airlines’ G.H. Mumm Brut NV.

The award for best international business class white wine went to Burgundy négociant Albert Bichot's 2011 Saint-Véran, served by All Nippon Airways. The top first class white award was given to Jet Airways for the 2010 Louis Jadot Puligny-Montrachet
When it came to red wine, Hainan Airlines reigned supreme in both categories with its 2011 Torres Sangre de Toro.

Among the U.S. airlines in the contest, Delta dominated. The company took top honors in the best overall North American wines category, as well as winning best North American white wine with its 2011 sauvignon blanc from Merry Edwards. However, when it came to red wine, Virgin America was the cream of the domestic crop, taking the top spot with its 2003 Fantesca Estate & Winery Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa's Spring Mountain District.

For the third year in a row, Global Traveler gave the best airline alliance wine award to SkyTeam.

A total of 34 airlines took part in the competition, submitting 162 samples to a New York City tasting. The judges ranged from sommeliers to wine merchants and winemakers.

Each airline had to submit five different wines – two reds, two whites, and one sparkling wine or Champagne – in order to be eligible for the overall prize.
