What does your wine say about you?

Red wine drinkers earn more and are more confident, while those who prefer white wine are supposedly better team players and more generous, according to a recent study.

The French Wines With Style Report examined the lifestyles of 2,000 wine drinkers who identify themselves as either red, white, rosé or sparkling wine drinkers. It found that red wine drinkers not only earned more money (£27,702 on average), but were more confident and most likely to have a degree and live in a detached house. In contrast, the average salary of a white wine drinker was £25,375 followed by rosé drinkers at £22,682 and sparkling wine fans at £22,479.

Those who drink red and sparkling were ousted as the most stingy, spending an average of £329 and £330 respectively on festive presents each year, compared to the £344 spent by rosé drinkers and the £361 spent by white wine drinkers.

In terms of personality, researchers found that red wine drinkers were most likely to consider themselves as “laidback and casual”, citing celebrities such as Matthew McConaughey and Ellie Goulding, while the majority of white wine drinkers considered themselves to be “authentic and natural”, like Holly Willoughby or Dermot O’Leary. Sparkling wine fans consider themselves to be “quirky and fun”, like Paloma Faith and Alan Carr, while fans of rosé most commonly described their personality as “glamourous and chic”, similar to Frankie Bridge and George Clooney.

When it comes to television, Downton Abbey was the favourite amongst sparkling drinkers, while those who prefer red were fans of Dr Who. White wine fans favoured Strictly Come Dancing, while rosé drinkers preferred the X-Factor.

Gerard Basset MW OBE, spokesman for French Wines with Style, said: “It seems there really are no secrets anymore, with even your choice of wine giving you away. If you want to understand a personality, all you have to do is watch what people are drinking. Most people have a favourite or preferred type of wine and by choosing it in front of others, you could end up giving away a few clues about your personality and lifestyle. Perhaps we can even find our friends, business and life partners by looking at the type of wine they like to drink.”
